To Deliver (TD) indicates the markings/calibrations indicate how much liquid was DELIVERED by the labware in its use. When adding 45.5 ml of some liquid to a reaction, you would want to be certain that all 45.5 ml was DELIVERED. Same for a burette in a titration. The TD glassware "delivers" the measured amount, disregarding and accounting for the fact that some of the liquid remains in the labware.
To Contain (TC) indicates the markings/calibration is to measure the amount of liquid CONTAINED in the lab ware. These would be used when making up a solution of known concentration, insuring that the volume of solution, or solvent (depending upon how you are measuring and whether you are making a molar or molal or % by weight or % by volume solution, etc) that would be present.
Both designations (TC and TD) will also have a temperature stated, since the volume of the liquid(s) will vary slightly as temperature increases or decreases. By Donald D (Yahoo Answers) |
